How to fix code p1610 a Nissan Note
P1610 on a Nissan/Infiniti NATS Lock Mode.
Your Nissan Anti-Theft System locked out the engine because it thinks someone’s using a wrong/unregistered key. The car cranks but won’t start, and the security light stays on solid.
This is common on Patrol, Altima, Maxima, 350Z, etc. from mid-2000s onward.
Why it happens
1. Tried starting 5+ times with an unprogrammed or damaged key
2. Weak/dying key battery or damaged chip
3. Bad NATS antenna around the ignition barrel
4. Low car battery during start
5. BCM/IMMU/ECM communication fault
How to get it out of lock mode - try in this order:
1. Escape procedure with a good key - no tools needed
1. Turn ignition OFF
2. Insert a known working registered key
3. Turn to ON for 5 seconds, don’t start
4. Turn OFF, remove key
5. Repeat 2 more times - 3 cycles total
6. Try starting on the 4th turn
If it starts once then locks again, your key isn’t fully registered.
2. Battery reset
1. Disconnect negative battery terminal for 30-60 min
2. Reconnect
3. Try the escape procedure above with your spare key
This clears the lock timer. Lock mode stays for ∼1 hour after 5 bad attempts.
3. Check the key
- Try your spare key if you have one
- Look for cracks on the key. If the chip fell out, it won’t work
- If you only have uncut/unprogrammed keys, that’s why it’s locked
4. If it still won’t start, you need key reprogramming
You’ll need a scan tool that does Nissan NATS like Autel, Launch X431, or Nissan Consult.
- A locksmith or dealer can re-register the keys and reset the BCM/IMMU
- Cost is usually $75-$150 for reprogramming 8718
5. Check NATS antenna and wiring
The ring around your ignition reads the key chip. If it’s unplugged or dead, you’ll get P1610.
- Check fuse for NATS antenna amp
- Look for loose connector at the ignition barrel
- Test for 12V at pin 8 of the IMMU connector with key ON 9cdb
Important
Don’t keep cranking with a bad key. After 5 tries it locks again and you’re back to step 1.
